Not Easy, Even When You Love The Topic

Sometimes, work can really drag you down. You wish you could spend your day doing the things you love to do--the things you do on weekends.

  1. watch "the game"
  2. go out with friends
  3. Drive a car (ok, maybe this one is just me)
  4. ...

Anyways, about 7 months ago, I was approached to write a book about Terracotta. I thought to myself, "This totally r3\/\/1z! I am going to get to codify all the thinking I put together in various meetings and presentations and conferences over the years into a larger, cohesive body of work."

My boss suggested I get several good writers / great engineers (Jonas Bonér, Geert Bevin, Alex Miller, to name a few) to help write the book. I thought, "sure." I started by blasting out a few chapters for the publisher and then closely guiding the other writers through thinking about and producing their chapters. Everyone turned in their work to me on time. We had 200 pages of stuff. Then Orion Letizi massaged it all together into something that resembled a book. And we were 2 months ahead of schedule!

Now, however, I find I have rewritten the 1st 3 chapters 4 times! And I still have 2 missing chapters, "power user" and "how to partition workload using Terracotta." Of course these are missing. The next release of the software scheduled for beginning of April plans to be a huge leap forward for the technology, so I waited and waited till more assurances were there that April would hit on schedule. Now it is all due this Friday. EEK!

As Homer Simpson would say, "Save me Geebus!"

Anyways, I will see you on the other side. Oh, and if you are in London next week / attending QCon, stop by the Terracotta booth and let's talk about your application.
